Mark Twain once said, "No man can reach Heaven by another man's road." Kids must find their own way. That is so difficult for parents to realize. We think we know exactly what kids should do and work so hard to make it happen the way we see it. We hover over, protect too much, give help when it is not needed, and order about. We work so hard at being the perfect parent that we cheat our kids in the process. We need to relax, set a good example, be there for support and provide good choices. The only way children can grow into healthy, productive, independent adults is to learn through their own mistakes. How to help them do that safely and how to make it easier and more fun to be a proud parent is what this book is all about. Whether you are a parent or grandparent, it is just plain fun to read 'Outfox the Kids for Fun and Profit,' with its bright and sparkling little true stories, fractured fairy tales, fables and parables. Here is the full review from "Reader Views" contest, where Outfox the Kids for Fun and Profit won its first award: 'R.W. Klamm is a man who is filled with humor, wisdom and insight. His ultimate goal with this book is to let parents know that we can make mistakes with raising our children, but not all is lost. We learn from our mistakes. He reminds us that parenting is not always about the desires of the parent(s) (materialistic) but of raising children who are independent, good problem-solvers and emotionally stable. Klamm starts his book by stating the obvious-- if you want to raise healthy, well-rounded children; you need to relook at your parenting style and relationship with your children. He gives the reader basic principles on raising children. These are not anything new to parents, but are things we sometimes forget. Through humorous stories, poetry and real-life examples, Klamm discusses peer pressure, sex, problem-solving and many other subjects that we as parents will encounter when we become parents. All of the stories in "Outfox the Kids for Fun and Profit" are interesting to read and have humor, but the undertone is one of providing guidance and problem-solving skills. It is filled with words of wisdom.'.

This study takes an interdisciplinary approach to one of Japan's thorniest public policy issues: why are women increasingly foregoing motherhood? The authors argue that the combination of an inhospitable labour market for women and insufficient support for childcare pushes women toward working harder to promote their careers, to the detriment of childbearing. The book provides policy recommendations for solving not just Japan's fertility issue, but those of other modern democracies facing a similar crisis.

In Conceptions of Parenthood Michael Austin provides a rigorous and accessible philosophical analysis of the numerous and distinct conceptions of parenthood. Austin rejects the 'proprietarian', 'best interests of the child', and 'biological' conceptions of parenthood as failing to generate parental rights and obligations but considers more sympathetically the 'custodial relationship', 'consent', and 'causal' conceptions of parenthood and ultimately defends a 'stewardship' conception.

Only a handful of communities have clinics specializing in the screening and treatment of defiant and ADD children - and those clinics have long waiting lists: Most parents are left to their own devices as they try to understand the problem and find a way to help their child. This behavior pattern tends to have life-long negative implications if not addressed. The book offers specific techniques, as well as encouragement, reassuring readers that the problem is not their fault and that by using the right strategies, the problem can be successfully resolved. The Halls are the perfect authors for this book: Phil is a licensed child psychologist with 34 years of experience. During his tenure as Director of the School Psychology Program at Minot State University, he provided a comprehensive clinic for children with oppositional and defiant behaviors and their families. Nancy is an education specialist with 27 years of experience.

"What do we as a society, and as parents in particular, owe to our children? Each chapter in Taking Responsibility for Children offers part of an answer to that question. Although the contributors vary in the approaches they take and the conclusions they draw, each one explores some aspect of the moral obligations owed to children by their caregivers. Some focus primarily on the responsibilities of parents, while others focus on the role of society and government." "Taking Responsibility for Children will be of interest to philosophers, advocates for children's interests, and those interested in public policy, especially as it relates to children and families."--BOOK JACKET.
